Dessert Board Recipe Featuring Mo Willems Unlimited Squirrels in I Want to Sleep Under the Stars

It was a great day in our house when the new Unlimited Squirrels in I Want to Sleep Under the Stars book came out! My kids read it cover to cover as soon as it arrived on our doorstep. The squirrels in this series are always hilarious and I love that there are science facts woven into this story. Zoom Squirrel, the main character in this story, wants to try sleeping outside under the stars. Do your kids beg you to sleep in the backyard like mine do? Well then maybe it's time you read this new Unlimited Squirrels book with them! For a reading snack, make this dessert food board I created inspired by the book!

Normally I make food boards that are great for lunch or dinner but today I wanted to create one that would be easy for families to make together for dessert. Just like Zoom Squirrel had never slept under the stars, I had never made a dessert board with my kids. They loved this one and your kids will too!

This recipe is filled with candy, fruit, popcorn, and nuts for a salty sweet taste that will please your entire family. I suggest making it right after you read your book with your child. Then you can snack on it while you read the Unlimited Squirrels book again! There are so many details in the book that I missed the first time through. Not only does each Unlimited Squirrels book feature a funny, furry adventure, but it also includes bonus jokes, quirky quizzes, nutty facts, and much more! So collect my ingredients below, put together the food board, and crack open this book again.

Unlimited Squirrels Dessert Food Board Recipe:

Here are all of the ingredients that I used to build this dessert food board. I didn't include many step-by-step directions, because you just place the items where you see them in the picture. Remember that if you don't have access to the exact item I have on the list, brainstorm with your kids what food could take its place. Use your imagination and have fun!

The Night Sky: Blackberries, blueberries, purple rock candy (crushed up), black licorice, star shaped sprinkles, yellow fondant for the moon, white fondant for the big stars.

The Tree and the Grass: Caramel corn, mixed nuts, green fondant for the leaves, green chocolate candies for the grass. I used a leaf shaped cookie cutter on the fondant but you could just cut it with a knife as well.

The Squirrel and the Nut: Brown and black fondant for the squirrel. I used a squirrel shaped cookie cutter but you can also print out a picture from the internet and cut out around it. The walnut is actually a chocolate truffle, but you can substitute an actual walnut instead.
