For as long as I can remember The Princess Bride has been one of my favorite family movies. I don't know when it started for me because I don't think that it was a hit in the theatre. Obviously it has developed a cult following over the years. Can you believe it's been almost 30 years since it was released? It is always a pleasure to introduce this film to new generations. I had one of those moments recently when I watched this with my kids for the first time. Of course, I had to make a fun lunch for them based on the movie.
What is your favorite part of The Princess Bride? For me it is probably the infamous Vizzini wine death scene. It is so hard to pick the top one though! There are so many iconic scenes it was pretty much impossible to get all of the best ones into this one lunch. Every compartment of the Easy Lunch Box has something from the movie in it though. Can you name all the references? The answers are below!
Ingredients: Sliced bread, cheddar cheese, turkey, avocado, red apple, grapes, sword and heart toothpicks, peanut butter (or nut-free spread), chocolate chips, Pirate's Booty.
Directions:
1. Make the sandwich with bread, turkey, cheese, and avocado. Cut off the avocado skin and use it to make the Westley facial features and "as you wish" words. Place them on top of the bread. You can secure them to the bread with a little cream cheese if you want. This part was inspired by my friend's lunch over at Bento for Kidlet. Place sandwich in main compartment.
2. Slice apple in half. Cut the skin off the top to create a fire design as shown. Repeat with cheddar cheese slice and put on top of the apple.
3. Skewer grapes with sword and heart toothpicks and place in side compartment.
4. Fill small container with peanut butter or nut-free spread. Top with chocolate chips. In another small container place Pirate's Booty.
Ok here are the answers! I already gave you the Westley face and quote on top of the sandwich. The apple is for Westley and Buttercup's trip through the Fire Swamp. The toothpicks are for the sword fighting and the love that Westley and Buttercup shared. The grapes reference the death of Vizzini when Westley outsmarted him. Of course the Pirate's Booty is for Westley being the Dread Pirate Roberts. Did you get the last two? Here's a hint. "No more rhyming and I mean it. Anybody want a peanut?" Then the most subtle reference was the chocolate chips for the miracle pill. That's all of them. Remember to let me know what your favorite scene is!
