This is actually a birthday lunch in surprise! My daughter is turning twelve today and one of her favorite all-time things is Harry Potter. She even had an entire Harry Potter themed birthday party this weekend. I might eventually have to do a blog post on all the fun parts of the party that we created. However, I have never made her a Hermione Granger lunch, so it was about time!
This is not my normal style lunch but I figured why not try something different? I think this might be the second lunch in which I have ever used rice in as the main dish. I'll even let you in on a little secret. I took the easy route and just went and bought sticky rice at a local sushi place today instead of making my own. It cost all of $2 and was worth every penny. Another hack is to put cold water on your hands as you're shaping the rice and rolling it in nori. This will help the rice not stick to your hands and also make the seaweed easier to seal. I made the lunch in an Easy Lunch Boxes container. So make sure to read the recipe below and share this with all of your Potterhead friends!
Ingredients: Sticky rice, nori (roasted seaweed), cooked red pasta, dried mango, red and black food coloring pens, tortilla, brown fondant or pretzel stick, yellow fondant, green grapes, grape tomatoes, almonds.
Directions:
1. Fill nori with sticky rice and roll together. Seal nori by using a little bit of water. Make one big roll for her body and two smaller rolls for her arms. Shape a larger amount of rice into a ball and stick on as the head. You can also use little bits of rice for her hands. I also put two more strips of nori on the front to give the subtle appearance of robes, and to cover her shoulders.
2. Cut two strips of dried mango and use red food coloring marker to make the stripes. Place below her head to create the Gryffindor scarf.
3. Arrange cooked red pasta around Hermione's head to make her hair. Cut her facial features out of nori and stick on her face. Surround her with almonds or another background of your choice.
4. Use tortilla and black food coloring marker to make her potions book and the label for "Polyjuice Potion." Place the book on her hand. Put the Polyjuice Potion label over green grapes in a side compartment. The potion itself was green so these grapes work nicely.
5. Finish Hermione by fashioning a wand out of brown fondant. I also carved come branches and leaves into the fondant to make it look like her wand. Alternately you can use a pretzel stick, I just didn't have any on hand. Someone ate all of them. I blame my kids. It certainly wasn't me.
6. For the second side compartment, cut another piece of dried mango and create the Gryffindor crest using red food coloring marker. Finish by forming yellow fondant into the shape of a lion. Place it on top of red grape tomatoes. Ten points for Gryffindor!
