How to Make a Fall Football School Lunch

Football season is here. School is here. For our family, it was time to combine the two into this lunch! My son is very excited to play football for his school and is also very into the NFL. We won't talk about the fact that he cheers for the wrong team. We are a Seattle Seahawks house, I don't know what happened with him and his love for the 49ers.

How to Make a Despicable Me Banana Minions Lunch Recipe!

What kid doesn't like Minions? I feel like these characters from Despicable Me have morphed from cute sidekicks to timeless characters that will be loved by generations. This is why my youngest to my oldest all love these creatures. Not to mention that Gru wouldn't be able to do half the stuff he does without them! This is why I had to make them into a lunch again.

Bananas are of course the perfect base for this lunch since Minions are obsessed with them anyway. I paired this with a teddy bear sandwich shaped like the Minions' favorite stuffed animal and also a blue and yellow treat. It's also fun to include some random stickers to complete the look. Fortunately, Minions are into pretty much everything so many stickers will work, Keep reading to find out how to make the actual food!

A Beverley Cleary The Mouse and The Motorcycle Food Art Lunch Recipe

If you talk to my family about children's books for any length of time, you won't get too far into the conversation without bringing up multiple Beverley Cleary books. She impacted my wife and me, as well as our kids, with her timeless characters such as Henry Huggins, Ramona and Beezus, and more. My personal favorite story of hers was The Mouse and The Motorcycle. I read it to my kids as soon as they were old enough.

I still remember sitting in my classroom in elementary school and reading this book for the first time. I was so engrossed in the story that I tuned out everything else around me and thirty minutes later was startled back to reality by a noise. I wanted to be like Keith and have my own mouse named Ralph who could drive toy motorcycles around. What kid wouldn't dream of this?

My family was saddened by her passing but in honor of Beverley Cleary's life, I made my son a Ralph S. Mouse The Mouse and The Motorcycle lunch. Can you spot the references to the book in this lunchbox?

How to Make an Easter Bunny Lunch

I'm always looking for new Easter food art ideas when it occurred to me. Why can't I turn the famous bunny pancake food art idea into a sandwich for Easter? So that is exactly what I did. It was pretty easy with a few tortillas and some circle cutters. You can make it for your kids as well and I'm going to show you how!

How to Make a Shamrock Quesadilla and Rainbow Sushi St. Patrick's Day Lunch Recipe

If you're mixing cuisines in your kid's lunch, why not do it on St. Patrick's Day? I decided to make a Shamrock quesadilla using heart cookie cutters but I also wanted to try to make sushi. So it made perfect sense to make Mexican food and Japanese food for a lunch on an Irish holiday, right?! Here is how I made these food art recipes for my kids.

Side note, I'm terrible at rolling sushi. I'm sure many of you out there can do a much better job than I did here. I tried to make a rainbow-themed roll which was tasty but I guess I need more practice. Maybe I should watch more YouTube videos on the topic as well. I also used to be really bad at cutting out hearts but then I just bought heart cookie cutters to make my life easier!

How to Make a LEGO Brick and Minifigure Food Art Lunch!

If your kids are addicted to LEGO like mine are, then you will want to make them this easy and fun LEGO lunch featuring bricks and minifigures! I seriously find LEGOs all around the house at pretty much all times. Yes, I've even damaged my foot for life by stepping on one brick before. Ok, maybe that is a bit dramatic but if you know you know.

Every year I try and make a LEGO lunch for my kids that has a twist on it. I've done frozen yogurt bricks, a few LEGO Movie lunches with Wyldstyle and Emmett, and a few others. This year I went with more of a generic minifig theme but tried something new with the dessert twist. Keep reading to find out how I made it!

How to Make a Grilled Cheese Laptop Computer Remote School Lunch

How to Make a Grilled Cheese Computer Remote School Lunch

We all know that not only is the world different in 2020 because of a pandemic, but school is vastly different as well. I have one child in full-time traditional school (on a modified schedule), one child who is completely remote, and one who is hybrid (on a modified schedule). Could anyone have predicted how complicated this year would be? I think I have finally accepted that the rest of this school year will probably be changing by the week. Thankfully we have technology so that my kids don't miss school days, even when there is snow this winter. This is why it was time for me to celebrate their remote learning accomplishments with a grilled cheese laptop computer lunch! Learn to make it below.

How to Make a Grilled Cheese Computer Remote School Lunch

I used to think that my technology knowledge was enough to get through any tech issues. As a dad I can fix anything, right? However, as my oldest has become a teenager I've found myself passing more of our family's tech problems on to her. My kids have grown up being digital natives while I just learned a little about computers as a hobby in my 20's. This is why I'm thankful for ESET and their new free Safer Kids Online guide for parents that help us to keep our kids safe on their many devices.

How to Make an Among Us School Lunch Recipe

If your kids are like mine they are obsessed, I mean OBSESSED with the game Among Us. How can you tell? If they go around saying "sus" all the time that would be your first clue. Your second would be if they keep talking about saving up money for hats and alien dogs with one eye. Well if you are in the same boat..ere...spaceship as me, then it might be time to delight them with an Among Us lunch. And you're in luck, because I'm going to show you how to make it!

How to Make a Twilight Saga Book Lunch

I always tell people that I get my inspiration from my kids. I make food art lunches based on what they are into at the moment. This is one of those lunches. My daughter has been addicted to Twilight over the last few months. She has read the entire book series twice now and is watching the movies with my wife. So I figured it was time to make her a lunch that celebrates her newest passion, the competition of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, and supernatural...fruit?

Since my daughter has been so into the Twilight saga books, I wanted to design the lunch after one of the book covers. I also had to go with what I had in my kitchen since I was running short on time and couldn't go to the store. Thankfully my daughter loves black olives almost as much as shoes Twilight! Keep reading to see how I made the rest.

How to Make a The Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skellington Lunch

If you have followed my blog for awhile you know Disney's The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of our favorite seasonal movies. It just puts us in the mood for the holidays. I try to make a lunch based on the movie every Halloween, Christmas, or even both! This year is no exception so it was time to make a Jack Skellington lunch featuring Oogie Boogie.

Who is your favorite character from this movie? Is it Jack? Sally? Zero? They are all so good it's hard to choose. My kids are even planning to dress up as character from The Nightmare Before Christmas this Halloween. If your kids are into this movie as much as mine are, keep reading to find out how to make them this lunch!

How to Make a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine School Lunch

How to Make a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine School Lunch

There aren't many characters as timeless as Scooby-Doo. I watched the show growing up and my kids now love it too! My youngest always asks to watch Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated on Netflix. I always bug my kids when they are watching the show by singing the original (and best) theme song while they yell back at me that that's not how it goes. It only makes me sing "Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you? Couldn't have the show without ya" even louder.

Since they love the show and the characters so much, I thought it was time to make my first Scooby lunch for them. It did not disappoint. Here is how I made it and how you can make it as well!

How to Make a Disney Onward Food Art School Lunch

We just saw the Disney Pixar movie Onward this weekend and had such a great time! We had watched so many previews for it and couldn't wait for it to come out. It dealt with many deep issues but also had some hilarious parts. I especially loved how it showed us the close relationship between the two brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, played by Tom Holland and Christ Pratt.

While I was experiencing the movie with my family, I couldn't help but notice all of the elements that I could use to make my kids a lunch. From the colors in the movie poster, to the wizard staff, to cheesy puffs, I tried to include as many as I could. Keep reading to find out how to make this lunch for your own kids!

How to Make a Disney Pixar UP School Lunch!

The Disney Pixar movie UP is one of my favorite animated films of all-time. Who can resist the love story of Mr. Fredricksen and Ellie, how Russell and Dug steal your heart, and of course a house flying with balloons. It's a classic. It has been years since I made an UP lunch so it was time to do it again. Keep reading to find out how I made it!

Disney Mickey Mouse Ears Halloween Food Art Lunch

Disneyland Halloween Party

It's that time of year again and we love to celebrate autumn and Halloween at our house. Better yet, we made this lunch for my boys to help give them a hint of the surprise that we revealed later in the evening...that we are going to Disneyland! Next month we are heading to the happiest place on earth for the Oogie Boogie Bash.

Of course I had to create a fun Disney lunch to celebrate and what better way to do that than with some Mickey Mouse ears sandwiches and a poison apple? I just had to throw some Jack Skellington Nightmare Before Christmas ears in there as well!

We finished the surprise by reading them a Disney story for bedtime. on the last page we included a note that told them to go to the door for a package. They ran to the door and grabbed a big box. Inside were Disney balloons and they had to guess what it all meant. They were shocked when we told them that their guess of going to Disneyland was correct. Not only that, but we are meeting some of our extended family there. We can't wait! In the meantime, keep reading for the ingredients to inspire you to make your own lunch.

Mo Willems' Because Book Musical Lunch Box Recipe Ideas!

Mo Willems Because Book Musical Lunch Box Recipe Ideas!

Have you ever thought back on key moments in your life, the people involved, and the events that fell into place, which then provided an opportunity that you have now? Mo Willems' new book Because is about those times where all of these things fall into place to make something magical happen! A little girl learns to create beautiful music because of a few chance happenings, hard work, and the impact of people around her.
Mo Willems Because Book Musical Lunch Box Recipe Ideas!

Can you think of any similar times in your life? For example, because someone bought your child a basketball for Christmas when they were five, they worked hard, were supported, and became a starter on their high school basketball team? For my family I would say because I started making my daughter these fun lunches six years ago, I was able to discover a love for social media, which opened up an opportunity to change careers and get a full-time job doing social media for a company. Sometimes I still can't believe it.

Take a minute to try and remember some of these "because" moments in your life or your family's life. Go ahead, I'll wait. Pretty amazing to think back on, right? If you enjoy seeing how everything is tied together, you and your kids will love the book Because. I won't give it all away, but my favorite points of the story are seeing the roles that people play that you don't even consider important at first. Train operators, paper printers, people who clean the floors, and others help make the music happen. Everyone is important!

PlanetBox Rover Product Review

PlanetBox Rover Review

The creative parents behind PlanetBox wanted to design a lunch box that helped to promote healthy kids and a healthy planet.  They desired to make it all-in-one, durable, with a simple to use latch, and easy to clean.  The resulting lunch box accomplishes most of those goals.  However, it isn’t perfect and there are some things to keep an eye on before you pack a lunch in it.  Click HERE to see the Finding Nemo Lunch I made in the PlanetBox Rover.

I reviewed the “PlanetBox Rover Complete” with CarryBag, magnets, and dipper set.  This model retails for $59.99, however packages without the bag or dippers are available for less.  There is also the larger “PlanetBoxLaunch” model.

The lunch box itself is constructed out of stainless steel so it is non-toxic and very sturdy.  It is reminds me of a lunch tray with five compartments to hold food.  The attached lid folds down and latches securely and easily.  The Rover’s tray cleaned up nicely in the dishwasher.  You can choose the style of magnets, which stick on the lid, to make fun designs.

There are two drawbacks to this design.  It is heavier than most lunch boxes and it doesn’t seal completely.  You should not pack foods like yogurt or applesauce inside because they will leak out.

To solve this problem you need a set of PlanetBox dippers.  I found out the hard way that these are necessary when I packed Jello in the Rover tray.  My daughter didn’t eat all of the Jello and it leaked everywhere. It was my own fault, however.  The instructions clearly state that the Rover tray is not leak proof.  The dippers can fit inside the tray or in the pocket of the CarryBag.

The CarryBag is well constructed and made with recycled materials.  It
has one carry strap and one shoulder strap.  One pocket on the outside can carry a bottle and the other can carry utensils or a dipper.  There is also a pocket on the inside.  The bag can be washed in soap and water.  This is fortunate since it was very sticky after the Jello mishap.  After a few uses the bag has a few small stains on it, but they don’t bother me much.  The CarryBag is handy because it fits the Rover and accessories well.

Overall, I like the PlanetBox system.  I found it durable and easy to clean.  The CarryBag is sturdy and the shoulder strap is handy.  However, if you like an all-in-one system you must remember that the dippers are almost a necessity.  These add extra pieces and cost.  This stainless steel lunch box is unique and fun, but starting at $39.99, it comes at a price.

Disclosure: PlanetBox sent me this product to review.  I have received no other compensation for this post and the opinions I’m expressing here are solely my own.

Week 26: Shrek

Monday, April 1, 2013

Week 26: Shrek.  April Fools, of course we are having a lunch this week!  However, my daughter is on spring break and Easter was yesterday, so I was short on ideas, time, creativity, and supplies. I was able to scrape up enough stuff that sort of went together to make a little scene out of Shrek.  I literally had to throw this together at 11 pm last night, so don't judge too harshly please!  Have a great spring break and baseball opening season is today, so Go A's!

Have fun making the lunch and don't stress about the details  your kids will just love that you put in the extra time and effort to make them a fun lunch.  Remember it's about the love you show them, and making it healthy.  Please leave me your comments on how you would improve this lunch or make it for your kids.  Remember to follow Lunchbox Dad on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube!

Ingredients

Black, brown, red, and green food coloring or food
   coloring marker
1 green apple
1 slice of white cheese
1 slice of cheddar cheese
1 hard-boiled egg
1 spinach wrap tortilla

1 piece of nori (dried seaweed)

Directions
  1. Cut a green apple in half (Granny Smith apples work great).  Use apple scraps to cut out two Shrek ears like in the picture.  Draw facial and ear features with black and red food coloring as shown in picture.  Cut out two eyes and teeth from a slice of white cheese.  Use brown and black food coloring on the eye pieces to add Shrek's eye color.  Place eyes and teeth on the apple face.
  2. Cut out a green spinach tortilla wrap to fit your container.  Cut out a slice of cheddar cheese to do the same.  Trim top of the tortilla wrap to look like two hills.  Give the hills definition by outlining them with black food coloring.  Place cheese at the top of container and spinach wrap over it to form the background.
  3. Put Shrek's apple face and ears in the bottom middle of the container.  Cut flower shapes out of hard boiled egg.  Use both the egg white and egg yolk to add a variety of colors.  Place them where desired by Shrek.  Use green food coloring to draw stems on each flower.
  4. Use nori to make the small castle and dragon in the background.  Take small scissors to cut out the silhouettes.  They don't have to be exact, use your imagination to make the kind of castle and dragon that you want!

Week 25: The Easter Bunny

Monday, March 25, 2013

Easter kids lunch
Week 25: The Easter Bunny.  I wanted to do an Easter themed lunch this week for my daughter and also give you readers some inspiration for lunches of your own.  I was reminded this week that even if you don't have school age children, these ideas can be great for birthday parties, play dates, and more.  I tried to incorporate bunny and egg themes into this lunch to make it festive.  Have a fun Easter!

CLICK HERE to see the video tutorial for this lunch, see how easy it really is to make!

Ingredients

2 pieces of sourdough or white bread
1 serving peanut butter and jelly
2 raisins
1 dried cranberry
2 baby carrots, cut in half
4 very small pieces of broccoli
1 handful of fresh spinach
6-8 yogurt-covered raisins
8-10 grapes
1 Tbsp. fat-free cream cheese and strawberry cream cheese
3-4 colors of food color markers or regular food coloring

Directions
  1. Use cookie cutter to make rabbit shape from two pieces of bread.  Spread peanut butter and jelly on bread and press together to make a sandwich.  This sandwich would also work with cheese and lunch meat.
  2. Dip two raisins in cream cheese and place on rabbit face to make eyes.  Repeat with dried cranberry for the nose.  Use a small amount of black food coloring on a toothpick to draw the mouth.  Spread strawberry cream cheese on each ear for decoration.
  3. Cover the bottom half of your container with spinach leaves.  Put the rabbit sandwich in the middle of the container with the bottom of the sandwich touching the bottom of the container.
  4. Place four baby carrot pieces vertically along the bottom of container on either side of the sandwich.  They should look like they are growing out of the ground.  Put a very small piece of broccoli on top of each carrot for the leaves on top.
  5. Cut grapes in half and use them as a background on the upper part of your container.  Use food color to decorate yogurt-covered raisins so they look like Easter eggs.  Scatter them around the sandwich on top of the grapes.  Finish by having fun serving and eating it!
