How to Make a Musical Instrument School Lunch

Do your kids play a musical instrument? My daughter started out playing the flute in sixth grade, then in seventh grade, she switched to the saxophone. She has been playing it ever since and loves it. In fact, this year as a freshman in high school she started marching band. How come no one told my wife and me that this takes as much of a time commitment as being on the football team? We love watching her play though and now my son is in the sixth grade playing the trumpet. Because of this, I figured it was definitely time to make a musical instrument lunch!

The lunch features a saxophone but I also made a trumpet version for my son using the same ingredients. It should work for any brass instrument. However, if your child plays the tuba and has to carry it back and forth to school, I don't know how they are carrying a lunch also. Those things are huge! But if you want to make this food art lunch, it is a saxophone quesadilla, a rainbow of fruit (for my daughter's band uniform), food picks, and tortilla sheet music. Read below for more of the directions.

Ingredients: Corn tortillas, cheddar cheese, blueberries, strawberries, celery, sweet peppers, black grapes, sliced lunch meat, flour tortilla, black food coloring marker.

Directions:

1. Cut corn tortilla into shape of the desired instrument. Then use the cutout to repeat twice more. Now use it to cut out two pieces of cheese in the same shape. Put pieces together and bake in oven at 350 degrees until cheese is melted. Take out and let cool.

2. I arranged the fruit in a rainbow design for my daughter's band uniform but you can really use whatever fruit you want. A good idea would be to try to use your child's school colors. I placed a school sticker on top but that is optional.

3. In the side compartment place black grapes. They kind of look like musical notes to me. Use musical food picks to go along with the theme. They are easily found on Amazon.

4. In the second side compartment pile up lunch meat. Cut a square piece out of flour tortilla. Use a black food coloring marker or black food coloring on a toothpick to draw the music on the tortilla and the details on the musical instrument. Place the instrument in the main compartment and sheet music in side compartment.
